PAWNEE WISDOM

In the beginning of all things, wisdom and knowledge were with the animals, for Tirawa, the One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent certain animals to tell men that he showed himself through the beasts, and that from them, and from the stars and the sun and the moon, man should learn.

~Pawnee chief Letakota-Lesa

For both humans and animals, facing separation and life beyond it can be particularly devastating. We form unique and heart felt bonds with our beloved animals. They rely on us utterly, and they in turn are there for us in many vital and unspoken ways throughout their lives with us. Animals are the only source of unconditional love some people have ever known. They are often our closest and most constant companions. Many support us as cheerleaders, teachers, healers, and even work partners as well as family members. From this perspective, we realize that in truth, all companion animals are service animals.

Furthermore, our responsibilities as animal guardians are enormous: making medical and afterlife decisions on their behalf, coping with unexplained disappearance or traumatic death can be particularly challenging. If we are the ones who must leave them behind, we must arrange for their futures and want to help them process their own grief and adjustment to a great many future changes.

It is common for us and for our animals to experience doubt, uncertainty, insecurity, fear, regret, anger, blame, guilt, and overwhelming grief. And because the grief we feel at losing our animals is so often not understood by others in our lives, our bereavement can be isolating and especially heart rending.

On the other hand, there is much to be learned through sharing experiences of illness, dying, death, and ascension. When we can remain present with one another in the depths of our love, we can grow our faith and encounter the awe and transmutation that Spirit grants to whose hearts are broken open.

As we face impending separation, it can be immensely supportive to share essences with our animals – whether it is they or we who are exiting the living world. Essences support us all by helping us lift our focus up from the earthly pain and struggle to higher dimensions and perspective, thereby deepening and highlighting the eternal love and connection that we share.

TRIBUTE TO A BEST FRIEND

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor….
then I remember,
it’s where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound….
then I remember,
It’s where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can’t be yours….
your golden voice is still.
But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.
I’ll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.

I Will Be There

And if I go, while you’re still here,
Know that I still live on,
Vibrating to a different measure
Behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me.
So you must have faith.
I wait the time when we can soar together again,
Both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to the fullest,
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart.
I will be there.
